Permit compliance
Removing a tree at your home
In West Vancouver you need a permit to cut any tree 75 cm or more in diameter, measured 1.4 m up the trunk. Multi-stem trees count once the stems together reach 75 cm.
Size isn't the only trigger. A tree is protected at any size if it's a heritage tree, a replacement tree from a past permit, or a protected species — Arbutus, Garry oak, Pacific yew, Pacific dogwood, or Yellow cedar over 20 cm. Trees in a Watercourse or Foreshore Protection Area are protected, as is any tree holding an active bird nest, or the nest of an eagle, heron, or osprey, whether it's active or not.
The District requires a report from an ISA-certified arborist for most of this work.

If you're building or developing
This is the part most people miss. As of December 15, 2025, the threshold drops from 75 cm to 20 cm on any parcel that's being developed. A tree that was fine to cut last year may need a permit today.
"Being developed" means at least one new building, or a subdivision creating a new parcel. The clock starts the day you apply for a building, demolition, or development permit — and it doesn't stop until that building permit is closed.
The permit is $330 for the first tree and $120 for each one after, non-refundable and paid on submission. Review runs about 2–3 weeks. Ironclad handles the report and the application so it doesn't hold up your build.
Fees and thresholds current as of July 2026. Rules and fees are subject to change.
