Many North Vancouver properties have steep backyards with mature conifers that can't simply be felled. These removals often require sectional dismantling and careful rigging to protect nearby homes, fences, and landscaping.

The District and the City have separate tree bylaws.

The District and the City have separate tree bylaws.

District of North Vancouver

In the District, you need a permit to remove or prune any tree 75 cm or more in diameter, measured 1.3 m up the trunk. Smaller trees can still be protected, and need a permit at any size, if they sit near a creek or ravine, on a slope steeper than 36%, or belong to a protected species like Arbutus or Garry oak.

The District requires a report from an ISA-certified arborist for most of this work. Ironclad Tree Care has ISA Certified Arborist and ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified arborists on staff, so we prepare the report, file the application, and coordinate with the District for you.

City of North Vancouver

The City's bylaw works differently. It protects trees 20 cm or more in diameter, but it exempts most detached and duplex homes, the RS and RT residential zones. If you're on a standard single-family lot in the City, you may not need a permit at all.

Multi-family, commercial, and some CD-zoned properties are still covered, so zoning is the deciding factor. We confirm yours before any work starts.

Jeff is a conscientious arborist who is easy to work with. He gave us great advice, and did a great job delivering on what he suggested. He even brought his stump grinder to get rid of some old stumps in our garden. Highly recommended!

Frequently asked questions

How much does tree removal cost in North Vancouver?

It depends on the tree's size, location, and how difficult the access is. A small backyard tree is a very different job from a large fir leaning over the house on a steep lot. Rather than guess over the phone, we come out and give you a free, no-obligation estimate so the price you hear is the price for your actual tree.

Do you offer emergency tree removal?

Yes. Fallen trees, storm damage, and limbs threatening the house can't wait, so we offer fast emergency response across North Vancouver and the North Shore. Call us and we'll make the site safe as quickly as we can.

Is Ironclad insured?

Fully. We carry $2 million liability insurance and are registered with WorkSafeBC, so both you and your property are protected. It's worth confirming this with any company before you let them do tree work, uninsured work on your property can leave you exposed.

Is Ironclad insured?

Everything gets cleaned up before we leave. Branches and debris are chipped on site, and larger wood can be left in rounds for firewood if you'd like it, or hauled away completely. Stumps are ground down below surface level. You choose what stays and what goes — we handle the rest.

Do you haul away the wood and clean up?

Yes, cleanup is part of every job. We remove the debris, grind stumps, chip the branches, and leave your property tidy. If you'd like the wood left as firewood rounds, just tell us and we'll stack it for you.

How soon can you come out for an estimate?

Often the same day, and within 48 hours of reaching out at the latest. Because we're based on the North Shore, we're not driving in from across the region, which means quicker estimates and quicker starts.

Do you do more than tree removal?

We do. Alongside removals, we handle pruning and maintenance and lot clearing, the full range of tree care for North Vancouver properties.
